Jared Lofft looked up with his brown eyes, seeing a large line in front of him. So I wait here to be judged? he asked the Reaper. He nodded, then disappeared. John Lofft had just died, the remnants of the tumor in his brain killing him, fortunately while he was asleep, so it was quite painless. He sighed and got in line.
He waited for what seemed like days, though he never got tired, or hungry. He finally made it to a large, tall podium, with an old, frail man at it. Name please, he said, moving the glasses on the bridge of his nose. Jared Lofft, he said loudly. Im not deaf, young man, theres no need to yell he said. Jared looked down, figuring since he was so high he wouldnt be able to hear. As the old man was looking up his name, he examined the split in the road at the podium. They were both exactly the same, each had a man in a ragged brown cloak covering his body, standing beside a large, white door. There was also a third person standing in front of the podium, dressed the same as the other two. Left, the elderly man instructed Jared. Jared gulped, and the person in front of the podium led him to the door and through it, into a dimly lit room. Hello, Jared, the person said, removing the hood covering her head and face. Jared turned and saw an elderly woman. Please, tell me about yourself, she said, slowly sitting on a chair, motioning for him to sit as well. It will be a moment, theyre getting things ready, she said with a small sigh. I did make it to Heaven, didnt I? he asked. Of course, she said, smiling. Now, tell me about yourself, she said again as Jared sat down.
My name is Jared Lofft. When I was born, I had a small brain tumor on my brain. It deformed my skull, and made me, to most people, ugly, he explained. Though the tumor was removed, the deformation was permanent. Most of my childhood was filled with grief. I was being picked on and called retarded. Id gotten used to it after a while, but it still hurt. I was quite depressed, and had become angry one day. Id planned on killing myself. I was 20. On my way home, I bumped into a man, he said, and his eyes seemed far off as he remembered the story
Watch where youre going! Jared said hostilely. I cant, the other said flatly. Why not? Jared asked, still annoyed. Im blind, you idiot, the other said, bumping Jared purposely in the leg with his cane. Oh, Im sorry, Jared said, anger suddenly vanishing. Its alright, you seemed like you were in a hurry, the other said. Not really, Jared said, looking down. Whats wrong? the blind man asked. Life in general, Jared replied. Oh come on. Is someone bothering you? The man asked, seeming to care a lot about Jared. I dont even know your name, Jared said. Matthew. Matthew Donovan, he answered. I was walking to the coffee shop at the corner, care to join me? He asked, a small smile on his face as he looked at Jareds general area, not able to look directly at Jared, being unable to see where he was exactly. Umm.. Sure, why not, Jared said, then waited for Matthew to start walking. Would you mind holding my arm so I know where you are? he asked, holding out a hand. O-okay, Jared said, slowly taking Matthews arm in his. You may lose your friends, though, he said quietly. Whys that? Matthew asked as they began to walk. Most think Im ugly, Jared said, unable to look Matthew in the eye from embarrassment. Do you really think I care what someone looks like? Matthew said, looking over t Jared. I
I guess not, Jared said, a blush coming to his face as he turned back to Matthew, noting how hed grown to like the other man. Oh, were here, Jared said, leading Matthew inside. They ordered their drinks and sat down at a table. Now that were here, tell me what was bothering you, Matthew said. Well, its just, Im so tired of all this. People make fun of me because my head is a bit deformed from a tumor that was removed when I was a child, he said, trying to keep from crying. Its alright. I dont judge by looks, Matthew said. I couldnt if I wanted to anyway, he finished with a small laugh. Jared laughed a bit as well, wiping the tears from his eyes. I like you, Matthew said. You arent like most people. That made Jared blush. T-thanks, Jared said. No ones ever told me that, he said. Well, I bet a lot of people would like you if they got past the surface, Matthew said, slowly reaching forward and taking Jareds hand. Jared gripped Matthews hand lightly and smiled. I
I like you too, Jared managed to say.
Thats beautiful, the woman said as Jared stopped speaking, wiping a single tear from her cheek. Yea, he was really wonderful, Jared said. But he died a few years back, he finished, then looked up at the woman. Is he here? He asked, an excited tone in his voice. Im not sure, really. So many people pass through here its impossible to know, she said, a bit ashamed she couldnt help Jared. But you may go now, she said standing up. I must go as well, she finished, then walked out the same door she came in. Jared looked at the other door, standing up and slowly walking over. He opened the door and felt something change. He looked around, but saw nothing. He walked over to a river the was running nearby, and noticed something that made his eyes wide and his mouth drop. The large lump on the back corner of his head that was caused from the tumor was gone. He raised a hand and touched his head, and realized it was real, and he began to cry. He continued until a man walked up behind him. Are you alright? the man asked. Jared nodded and wiped the tears away. I was just so excited. I once had a deformed head from a tumor that was under my skull, and its gone, he said. He looked over at the man. You remind me of someone, Jared told the man. Really? the man asked, Who? My boyfriend, he said. He died a few years ago, Jared said. Who says Im not? The man said with a smile. M-Matthew?! Jared asked. Ive missed you, Jared, Matthew said, 4 years, he finished. Four long years, Jared said, standing and running into Matthews arms. Matthew pulled away for a moment, looking Jared up and down. Its nice to finally be able to see you, Matthew said. When I walked through that door, I regained my vision, he explained. Jared nodded, beginning to cry again. I love you, Jared said, holding Matthew tight again. I love you too, Matthew said back. S-so this is heaven? Jared asked, now calm. Yea, this is our piece of Heaven. Anything we imagine becomes reality here. If I imagined a large steak being cooked on a grill, itll appear, though, we wont ever grow hungry or tired. Its kinda nice, Matthew said with a smile. Theres also no pain, so we can stump our toe and it wont hurt. Thats neat, Jared said. So, what shall we do first? Matthew asked. Jared thought a moment, and a moment later a small bottle of lube appeared beside the intertwined two. Matthew blushed. Geeze, Jared, you always were a pervert, I dont see how He let you in here, Matthew teased. Jared simply smirked, kissing Matthew lightly on the neck before bending over to pick up the bottle.
